Tudela: Sephardic Heart of the Ebro
The Jewish presence in Tudela dates back to the Muslim founding of the city, around the year 802, when the first Hebrews settled almost from the very origin of the town. Under Muslim and later Christian rule, Tudela became one of the great Jewish centers of Navarre, with figures such as Benjamin of Tudela, Abraham ibn Ezra, and Yehuda ha-Levi, who contributed to its cultural and religious prestige.
The Jewish quarter was located in what is now the old town, around Judería Vieja street. Coexistence was notable until the 15th century, when persecutions increased and, finally, expulsion was decreed in Navarre in 1498. Today, Tudela keeps the Sephardic memory alive in its urban layout and is part of the Network of Jewish Quarters of Spain.
Currently, Tudela promotes tourist routes, cultural events, and interactive experiences such as the Sephardic gymkhana, allowing visitors and locals to discover the history and Jewish legacy through tours, puzzles, and activities that highlight its multicultural heritage.
