Lucena: The “Pearl of Sepharad”
Lucena, known in the Middle Ages as Eliossana, was one of the largest Jewish communities on the Iberian Peninsula, even being considered an eminently Jewish city between the 9th and 12th centuries. It stood out for its Talmudic academy and its Hebrew cemetery, one of the largest in Europe, discovered and enhanced in the 21st century.
Lucena is the only non-provincial capital Andalusian city that is part of the Network of Jewish Quarters of Spain. The expulsion of 1492 marked the end of the community, but the Sephardic legacy remains alive in the city’s heritage, memory, and local historical research.
